At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon

  • At Home in Mitford is by one of the best selling authors of Christian fiction today. The story is set in a mountain town in North Carolina in modern times. Jan Karon makes her characters come alive in this story about an Episcopalian minister who faithfully watches over his parishioners and truly loves them and tries to help them in every way possible. He also finds the woman of his dreams but isn't sure whether or not he's willing to pursue the relationship further.

The people in the fictional town of Mitford make the book delightful. Timothy Kavanaugh is the parish priest. He seems to be the glue that keeps things running at his church. Cynthia Coppersmith is his new next door neighbor who writes and illustrates children's books. There's an entire town full of colorful characters that interact with Timothy. It's the town itself and the people who live in Mitford that make you want to take your next vacation there.

My sister got me started reading At Home in Mitford and at first I was skeptical because I had not heard of Karon at the time, but I'm so glad that she gave me the book. Reading this book was like taking a vacation in the town of Mitford because Jan Karon writes in a way that makes you feel as if you're really a part of Mitford. I really cared about what was happening to the townspeople and didn't want the book to end. Thankfully Jan Karon has gone on to write more stories about the townspeople of Mitford in successive books.
